Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A lithographed proof for a valentine design in black ink on a single sheet of 4to-size thin, white wove paper with embossed corners and a lace-paper edge. At the centre is a small, rectangular lithographed scene of a church interior with a couple sitting on a pew in the right foreground. A hand-written verse in brown ink at upper centre: 'Already have we pledged our vows / Our Union now draws near / But when shall we be asked in church? / Say for I long to hear / Let not a single hour's delay / Fair Valentine protract the day'. An inscription in brown ink in a different hand written along the left side of the pape is an instruction for an alternative ending to the verse: 'Or for 2 last lines / And let not [ ... ] delay / Fair Valentine protract the day'. An inscription in graphite at lower centre again relates to the accompanying verse: 'Asked in Church / 6 lines'. 'No 1/ X' written in graphite (probably in the same hand) at upper right.
