Valentine card
Printmaker: Gilks, Edward
A hand-coloured lithograph on white wove paper cut into a small oval medallion and mounted onto the recto of a folded sheet of cream laid paper. A female figure wearing doublet and hose and holding a plumed hat. A lithographed verse is printed onto the cream laid paper below: 'Bareheaded, Lady, on thy state, - / As humble pages should, I wait, ...'. The lithograph is signed at lower left: 'GILKS.' A watermark: '[bracket with ?horn and fleur de lys] ?I E'. The interior is blank. This is one of three designs for valentines by Gilks mounted onto the same page of album P.14414-R which feature small lithographs of women in theatrical costume that are cut down and pasted onto paper with either hand-written or lithographed verse below. This design was probably produced between 1847 and 1852, as this seems a likely date for P.14414-R-122, a similar design mounted on the same leaf of the album. Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852.
