Valentine card
Printmaker: Gilks, Edward
A lithographed design for a valentine, printed in black ink on a wide horizontal strip of white wove paper. A rectangular border surrounds an inner border of scrolls containing a scene of two lovers wearing medieval costume reclining on a grassy bank, a church visible in the distance on the left and several winged putti carrying flower garlands hovering above. Motifs of Cupid's quiver and arrows are drawn at the corners of the outer frame. The lithograph is signed at lower left: 'E. Gilks Lith'. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836-1843 or between 1844-1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London. Another design from the same series by Gilks, which has been hand-coloured and trimmed, is mounted on the album leaf opposite. See P.14414-R-133.
