Valentine card
Printmaker: Gilks, Edward
A hand-coloured lithographed design for a valentine on white wove paper cut from a larger sheet and trimmed (clumsily) around a lithographed border of scrolls. The border encloses a scene of two lovers wearing historical costume sitting on a grassy bank viewed from behind, the male figure on the left with his arm around the shoulders of the female figure. A bridge and church spire can be seen in the distance and several winged putti carrying flower garlands hover above the couple. The lithograph is signed at lower left: 'E. Gilks Lith'. P.14414-R-133 is from the same series as P.14414-R-132, an untrimmed and uncoloured design mounted onto the album leaf opposite. The figures seen in P.14414-R-133 are also the mirror-image of an embracing couple on a grassy bank seen in another valentine design by Gilks, an example of which is mounted in album P.14414-R; See P.14414-R-110. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836-1843 or between 1844-1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London.
