Description

A mourning or 'Adieu' valentine. A large 4to-size white lace-paper panel with a scalloped edge and a central oval window is mounted over a watercolour scene on paper which is mounted onto a slightly larger sheet of pink-coloured card. A scene of rocks and water at sunset is visible through the oval window, onto which is affixed cut-paper lithographed and hand-coloured figures of an angel in pale blue drapery bearing a dark-haired woman in pink, with hands pressed together in prayer, up to heaven. A lace-paper edged lozenge affixed at lower centre is hand-painted with the word, 'FAREWELL'. The lozenge is stamped 'ROCK' at lower right. A hand-drawn border of red paint with a flower motif pattern is drawn on the card mount around the edges of the lace-paper. On the verso is an inscription in graphite in an unknown hand: 'A mourning or Adieu Valentine / c. 183- / Mourning Valentines / are scarce'. This inscription repeats the sale information given in a sale catalogue clipping which is affixed to the back fly leaf beside P.14414-R-135: 'Old Valentines - continued. / 585 An "Adieu" Valentine ... c. 183- ... Mourning valentines are scarce.'. This valentine appears to have been bought in 1924 from the bookseller, R.S. Frampton who was based at "Walton House", 37 Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park, London, N4. The bookseller's catalogue (No. 36), with several lot descriptions cut from it, was found in boxes containing Glaisher's valentines.
