My Heart and Lute Valentine card
Printmaker:
E.F.H.
Publisher:
Fuller, S. & J.
Loose inside album P.14414-R after the first leaf inside a large brown manila envelope with a sheet of brown paper mounted with two further valentines, P.14414-R-L2. A hand-coloured comic lithograph (as etching/engraving) on heavy white wove paper which has been cut down on all sides. A man with a dirty cheek and a hole in the elbow of his coat holds a lute in his left hand and presses his right hand to his chest. He kneels before a large woman wearing white with pink ribbons and holding a fan in her right hand. The initials 'E.F.H.' are printed at lower right. A verse entitled 'MY HEART AND LUTE.' is printed below: ' "I give the [sic] all, I can no more / Tho poor the offering be, / My Heart and Lute are all the store / that I can bring to thee."'. _My Heart and Lute_ is a poem by Irish poet, Thomas Moore (1779-1852), which seems to have been published at least as early as 1823. Two handwritten inscriptions in graphite at lower left: 'circa 1800-5' and at lower right: '2 /- [2 shillings]'. Both most likely added by dealers. Traces of brown paper on the verso indicate that it was previously mounted elsewhere. The publisher's details have been trimmed off below the verse, but comparison with an untrimmed example in the collection of Malcolm Warrington reveals the publisher's details printed thus: 'Pub.d by S & J Fuller, 24, Rathbone Place, Feb.y 28. 1828'.
