Valentine card
Printmaker:
Gilks, Edward
Designer:
attributed to
Loose inside album P.14414-R between numbers 112 and 113. A hand coloured lithograph on white wove paper with an embossed border (as lace). At upper centre is a small vignette of a wall and vine with a bunch of purple grapes. A lithographed verse is printed in gold ink onto a piece of white wove paper which is cut into an octagonal shape and pasted below the vignette: 'Purple clusters in the sunshine / On a southern wall / Silken wings about them flitting / Like a coronal ...'. The print-maker is almost certainly Edward Gilks as P.14414-R-L11 is grouped together with a number of designs for valentines by Gilks in album P.14414-R and is stylistically similar to them. See especially P.14414-R-111, P.14414-R-115, P.14414-R-117 and P.14414-R-118, all of which feature lithographed vignettes of fruit or flowers above a lithographed verse. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836-1843 or between 1844-1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London. The interior is blank. From a series of lithographed valentines and valentine designs by Gilks mounted together in album P.14414-R. Other valentine designs by Gilks are contained in album P.14346-R.
