Description

Loose inside album P.14415-R, on the fourth leaf. A hand coloured lithograph on 8vo-size white wove paper with an embossed border (as lace) featuring valentine emblems of Cupid, Hymen, a fountain and urn of flowers at the four corners. A large stone temple decorated with red hearts along the triangular pediment and with a light-filled, garlanded urn at the top. A door carved with the name: 'HYMEN'S / TEMPLE' opens at the centre to reveal a sepia lithograph with hand colouring of a couple being married by a priest. A lithographed verse is printed in black ink below: 'In Hymen's Temple you see above / Sacred to Constancy and Love; / Look within, and there you'll see / What pleases you, and pleases me …'. the interior is blank. The small square of paper printed with the hand coloured lithographic scene at the altar is pasted to the verso of the front. A watermark: 'W&J HARRIS / TURKEY MILL / 1843'. P.14410-R-20 is a similar hand coloured lithograph featuring an opening door within the design, probably from around the same date.
