Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A partially hand-coloured lithograph on thin, white wove paper. The hand-colouring is clumsily executed. A lady wearing a green dress (c. 1830s) reads a valentine in an ornate interior with pilasters, tasselled curtains and jardinieres. A pair of doves sit on a dish at far right. 'No. 2' is printed at lower right and indicates that this valentine was one of a series. A printed verse below: 'Accept the kiss contained in this, / To greet you on this happy day / When birds in pairs forget their cares / And yield to mirth and sportive play ... This happy day say, only say / You will be mine, sweet Valentine'. The interior is blank. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '3/6 [3 shillings and sixpence]'. This presumably records a price from the verso which was visible prior to mounting.
