Description

A hand-coloured lithograph with an ornate printed 'frame' on pale pink wove paper. The frame contains a half-length view of a woman at a writing desk, her dress coloured yellow and red, seen in profile facing right and writing a letter with a quill held in her right hand. A verse is printed above and below: 'To breathe the wispers [sic] of accepted love / with feelings constant, ardent & sincere / Pure is the joy with thee my love to rove / When souls congenial know each other dear'. The interior is blank. One of six valentines from the same series, all with the same ornate printed frame on pale pink or white paper, and which are mounted together in album P.14416-R. An inscription on the album leaf below P.14416-R-35 indicates that all six were bought by Glaisher for four shillings. The price was probably transcribed from a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), where P.14416-R-35 is listed with the description '& 5 similar (the six for) 4/0'. The other 5 can be identified as: P.14416-R-34, P.14416-R-36, P.14416-R-38, P.14416-R-39 and P.14416-R-40.
