Description

A hand-coloured lithograph with an ornate printed 'frame' on pale pink wove paper. The frame contains a half-length view of a couple reading a letter together, the young woman sitting on the knee of the young man. The figures are framed by leaves and hanging fruits. A verse is printed above: 'I've often wished to have a Friend / With whom my sweetest hours to spend / To whom I safely might impart / Each wish and weakness of my heart ... And to secure my bliss for life / I'd wish that Friend to be my Wife'. The interior is blank. One of six valentines from the same series, all with the same ornate printed frame on pale pink or white paper, and which are mounted together in album P.14416-R. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '6 for 4/ [6 for 4 shillings]'. This presumably records a price from the verso which was visible prior to mounting, but was probably transcribed from a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), where P.14416-R-35 is listed with the description '& 5 similar (the six for) 4/0'. The other 5 can be identified as: P.14416-R-34, P.14416-R-36, P.14416-R-38, P.14416-R-39 and P.14416-R-40. P.14416-R-73, a larger card with an additional lithographed mock picture frame border, employs the same verse.
