Description

A tinted wood cut printed in green ink on thin, white, 4to-size wove paper. A broad, ornate, lace-design wood cut border containing a tinted wood cut printed in green ink with hand colouring of a male figure wearing a kilt who holds a shepherd's crook and leans against a stile, his eyes cast downwards. A letterpress verse is printed above and below: 'Can I forget those hours of bliss / That I have spent with thee? / Can I forget the parting kiss, / Which sealed thy faith to me? / Tho' thou and I no more may meet, / Nor be where we have been, / Yet still to dear remembrance sweet, / Shall be our parting scene'. The interior is blank. One of eight valentines with the same tinted wood cut design mounted together as a group in album P.14416-R. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '6 /= a pair [6 shillings for a pair]'. This presumably records a price from the verso which was visible prior to mounting and indicates that all eight were bought by Glaisher for 24 shillings or £1 and 4 shillings.
