Description

A tinted wood cut printed in blue ink on thin, white, 4to-size wove paper. A broad, ornate, lace-design wood cut border containing a tinted wood cut printed in blue ink with hand colouring of a female figure standing beside a stile, a lamb to her left. A letterpress verse is printed above and below: 'Art thou not dear unto my heart? / O, search that heart and see; / O from my bosom tear the part / That beats not true to thee. / But to that bosom thou art dear, / More dear than words can tell; / And if a fault be cherished there, / 'Tis loving thee too well.'. The interior is blank. The front is adhered to the back at lower right. One of eight valentines with the same tinted wood cut design mounted together as a group in album P.14416-R. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below P.14416-R-41: '6 /= a pair [6 shillings for a pair]', indicates that all eight were bought by Glaisher for 24 shillings or £1 and 4 shillings.
