Description

An acrostic valentine. A lithograph with hand colouring on 8vo-size thin, white wove paper. A lithographed border of stylised leaves and flowers surrounds a hand-coloured scene in a garden of a lady wearing a pink dress with the boy, Hymen and a flaming torch to the right. The words 'FAITH' and 'TRUTH' are drawn as double-edged, stylised letters around the same theme as the border. 'No 3' is lithographed at the lower right of the image, indicating that this design is one of a series. Two verses in the form of an acrostic are printed in a sloping script at lower centre . The first letters of each line of the first verse spell out the word 'FAITH' and the first letters of each line of the second verse spell out the words, 'TRUTH': 'F-air as the Sun at early rise / A -nd beauteous as the summer skies, / I -prize the joys that Hymen brings, / T-o me more wealth than ere hath Kings / H-ear me for Life & Love hath wings: ...'. The interior is blank. One of a series of similar designs in the same style which are mounted on consecutive leaves of album P.14416-R. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '2/6 [2 shillings sixpence]'. This pricing was probably transcribed from the handwritten MS by second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), where P.14416-R-49 is listed and priced at 2/6.
