Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-size white wove paper. Hymen sits on a swing garlanded with pink roses, holding a torch in his left hand, two hearts aflame and pierced with arrows hovering in the air to his right. Above Hymen is an ornate canopy of leafy scrolls and birds of paradise. A verse is printed in sloping script below: 'I thought my heart consuming lay / On Cupid's burning shrine / I thought he stole my heart away / And placed it near to thine! / I saw thy heart begin to melt / Like ice before the sun, - / Till both a glow congenial felt / And melted into one'. The interior is blank. Similar in style to P.14416-R-75, which is mounted on the adjacent leaf. A hand-written inscription in graphite on the album leaf below: '2/6 [2 shillings sixpence]'. This pricing was probably transcribed from the handwritten MS by second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1). This card is listed with P.14416-R-75 in the Frampton MS, with each priced at 2/6 [2 shillings and sixpence].
