Description

Large basin. Hard-paste porcelain painted in famille verte enamels, green, blue, rose, grey, yellow, iron-red and black, and gilding. The basin has steep, rounded sides with broad, everted rim rising from the flat, recessed base. Painted with Jang Qian reaching the Palace of the Queen Mother of the West in the Stars by following the Yellow River to its Source. The scene depicts ladies on balconies within the Palace, musicians, the tea ceremony, weaving, playing games and watching Jan Qian on a tree trunk floating down river, and a boy on a buffalo in a rocky landscape. The rich, diaper border is reserved with eight panels, four of prunus, and four of a butterfly, crane, phoenix and serpent.
