Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A comic valentine. A hand-coloured lithograph on white wove paper. A brass, candle-holder holds a lit candle which is printed with the motto: 'NOURISH THE / FLAME OF LOVE'. Resting on the base of the candle-holder is a pair of snuffers (the box would hold the trimmed wicks) and an extinguisher with hanging loop. The extinguisher has a remnant of applied paper at the tip, which suggests that the card may have originally included a moveable part. On the left, a small, skirted putto tries to catch a pink butterfly from behind an oil lamp with a flower-patterned ceramic base and on the right, another small skirted putto looks into a glass filled with liquid and a containing a spoon. A comic verse is printed at lower centre: 'Like this taper brightly burning / In my heart young love doth smoulder; / Extinguish not my hopes by spurning, / Nor snuff my love with the cold shoulder.'. The back paper is missing.
