Album of valentine cards
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 4to-size half-bound album in dark red leather with gold rolls and fillets along the spine and lighter red leather boards. Heavy cream wove leaves. Hand-written inscriptions in graphite on the verso of the first leaf: 'M?S- / 278 / 134'. A stamp in black ink on the back board: 'TRADEMARK / [image of seated figure] REGISTERED'. A number stamped beside the trademark stamp on the back board: 'No 6002'. This album is mentioned by Glaisher in a letter to Miss Catherine Parsons: 'The red book was bought long ago for balloon cuttings, but I thought I would use it for valentines'. Fitzwilliam Museum archive, MS 891-1985, 9th September, 1924, letter to Miss Catherine Parsons. This fact would appear to explain the location of the cutting of the Willows airship flight which was found loose inside the front cover of this album. See P.14417-R-L1. CONTENTS: Contains valentine cards generally dating from the 1840s to the 1900s and mainly decorative valentines employing collage and lace-paper, including a number of sachet valentines.
