First Love Valentine card
Publisher: Rimmel, Eugène
A large envelope of white lace-paper with 'SOUVENIR' embossed at the centre of the recto. Four flaps on the verso open to reveal a lace-paper bordered chromolithograph of a couple walking in a moonlit garden towards a fountain in the distance on the right. A gateway with temple is seen on the left. Cupid and two putti are hiding behind an urn in the foreground. Cupid prepares to fire an arrow towards the couple. A title: 'First Love' is printed at lower right. A medallion set within the lace-paper frame is embossed with the maker's name: 'E RIMMEL / PERFUMER LONDON'. An advertising leaflet for Rimmel's Perfumed Valentines of 1875 lists shilling valentine 367 as 'Souvenir, forming a card case', which would seem to be an accurate description of this valentine. (An example of the leaflet is in Malcolm Warrington's valentine collection).
