Description

A valentine of embossed lace-paper of a design of passion flowers growing on a trellis. The paper is hand coloured. There is a slip of yellow paper behind and a panel is white silk at lower centre which is printed with the title and verse in blue ink: 'Forget-Me-Not. / Amidst the world's gay revelry, / Or in its troubled stream, / Forget me not, let not the past, / Be as a fleeting dream. / Let not the happy hours we shared, / Be past as nothing by, / Forget me not, e'en if you must, / Remember with a sigh'. An oval window at upper centre contains a Baxter-process print by Baxter licensee, Joseph Mansell known as 'Apple Pickers'; a young woman wearing a yellow skirt and sleeves and pink bodice puts fruit into a basket of apples held by a young girl. See _A Pictorial Catalogue of Joseph Mansell’s Baxter Process Prints_ compiled by Michael Martin, Brian Lawrence and Roger Smith for the New Baxter Society, 2006, 'Apple Pickers' reproduced as no. 160, from Sheet H – Country Figures, p.49. The same Mansell Baxter-process print is seen in P.14426-R. The back paper is missing. An initial 'E' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine. The names 'Edith' and 'Netty' are written into the album. These names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent. The same Mansell Baxter-process print is seen in P.14426-R.
