Description

A valentine of white embossed lace-paper with a design of scrolls and with hand colouring in pink, green and blue watercolour. A window at the centre with a scalloped edge contains a white silk panel lithographed with a title and verse in blue ink: 'Let us be up and doing. / LIVES of great men all remind us / We can make our lives sublime, / And departing, leave behind us / Footprints on the sand of time: / Let us, then, be up and doing, / With a heart for any fate; / Still achieving, still pursuing, / Learn to labour, and to wait.'. 'MANSELL' is stamped at lower centre. The front paper is adhered to the back. An initial 'E' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine. The names 'Edith' and 'Netty' are written into the album. These names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent.
