Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A large 8vo-size valentine of cream wove paper with a hand-painted edge in pink. A central hand-painted design of a large pink rose is cut into a cobweb device which, when lifted up with the silk thread attached reveals a hand-drawn image of a red heart containing the motto: 'Forget me not'. Four leaf motifs are hand-drawn in gold leaf around the central rose. A hand-written verse in black ink (a florid, calligraphic hand) at upper and lower centre: 'Whilst I with hope my love impart / Return that love to me / And let thy smiles delight a heart / That beats alone for thee.'. The valentine has been folded back on itself so that the decorated side is the inside right-hand page and the addressed side appears as the recto. The valentine has been folded several times for delivery and is addressed: 'For / Mr Thomas Clarke / No 8 Bucklersbury / City [London]'. The postmarks are only partial and fail to indicate a date, but the paper is watermarked: 'J WHATMAN / 1828'.
