Description

A large 8vo-size valentine of cream wove paper with a lithographed and hand-coloured design of flowers arranged around an oval medallion containing a head and shoulders portrait of a dark-haired gentleman wearing a blue coat. Below the portrait are two hearts tied together with a red ribbon. A lithographed verse at lower centre: 'Tis Union here which gives delight, / A happy mixture charms the sight, / Sensations sweet bestowing! / In Human life 'tis just the same, / Those Pleasures to which all lay claim / In Wedlocks Stream are flowing.'. The interior is blank. The valentine has been folded several times for delivery. Some of the creases are very worn. A handwritten address in black ink on the verso: 'Miss L Davids / Pinwall St / 20 Gonvill St / R[...]'. A red stamped postmark: '[...] / FE20 / 1838'.
