Sailor's Farewell Valentine card
Printmaker: Bartolozzi, Francesco (Attributed)
A large, 4to-size hand-coloured engraving printed in sepia ink on cream laid paper. There is a border of brown wash around the edges of the paper on the recto. A central scene of a sailor in an embrace with his lady. A ship on the sea in the background to the right, bearing the union flag. A church can be seen on the hillside in the distance to the left. Above and to the right, Cupid hovers, preparing to fire an arrow at the couple. Printed below the image: 'F. Bartolozzi R.A. Inv. Delt. et Sculpt'. A verse is printed above and below the central image: 'The distant climes may us divide / To think on you shall be my pride / The Winds and Waves may prove unkind / In me no change you'll ever find. / A Magic Spell will bind me fast / And make me love you to the last / Let Cupid then your Heart incline / To take me for your Valentine.'.

Although this print is commonly attributed to Bartolozzi, it is unlikely to have been executed by him and his signature was probably added to the plate by the publisher to enhance sales. The print is unlisted in De Vesme's catalogue raisonne and although Tuer lists a subject on the departure of a sailor, this relates to the work of John Hodges Benwell, whose work Bartolozzi engraved, but which does not resemble this print. Bartolozzi's name seems to have been removed from the plate in later reprints (See, Staff). The brown wash border may have been added to enhance the sepia printing ink.
