Valentine card
Publisher: Whitney, George C.
A valentine made by the American company, George C. Whitney. Square card with shaped edges folded in half along the top edge. An embossed chromolithographed design of narcissi, forget-me-nots, daisies, poppies cobwebs and red and gold hearts surround a central heart containing a chromolithographed scene of a round-faced young girl with a yellow bow in her hair, eating at a table accompanied by a toy bear. A smaller square of cream lace-paper is mounted onto the front with two paper springs. Two small chromolithographed scraps affixed to either side of a cupid fishing for hearts and a red heart containing two children's heads kissing. Inside is a lithograph of a boy and girl in a boat flanked by heart motifs. A verse is printed below: 'There are many kinds of Valentines, / Some made of lace and glue, / "Comics" and the stand-up kind,/ And then there's post cards, too; / But when I choose My Valentine, / I'm going to choose just YOU.'. On the verso, a monogrammed trademark: 'Whitney Made / Worcester Mass. / MADE IN U.S.A.'. For George C. Whitney & Company, see Ruth Webb Lee, _A History of Valentines_, pp. 67-75.
