Description

Octagonal section baluster vase and cover. Hard-paste porcelain painted in famille verte palette, green, iron-red, blue, yellow, aubergine and black. The shouldered body tapers towards a splayed base and is surmounted by a flared neck with galleried rim, all of octagonal section. The base is flat and unglazed. The neck is decorated with eight panels, four containing flower sprays alternating with four containing various scrolls, books and vessels, above a flower and dot border. The eight shoulder panels are painted with two scenes of a sage in landscape, a deer, and a tiger, interspersed with four panels of flowers and foliage. The eight vertical panels below are similarly decorated with two scenes of two ladies on a verandah, a deer and crane in a landscape, a tiger and magpie in a landscape, interspersed with four panels of flowers, foliage and insects, above a flower head and cell-pattern border around the foot. The cover is decorated with four panels of scholarly objects alternating with flowers, and eight flower panels and chrysanthemum painted on the knop.
