Description

A valentine contained inside a small envelope. The valentine is of white lace-paper with a central panel mounted with a red fabric flower with gouache painted centre and large green fabric leaves. The stem, additional leaves and buds are hand painted. A small paper scroll with lithographed verse in blue ink (missing in places): 'Oh say that I may / call you mine / My hearts [sic] / choice my Valentine'. MEEK is stamped at lower left. On the inside right-hand page is a personal handwritten verse in black ink: 'When on N.Z. shores I pine / To call some gentle being mine / I'll think of thee sweet Ellen fair / and wish thy lovely presence there'. The valentine has been folded twice. The small envelope of white wove paper is addressed on the recto in black ink to: 'Miss Ellen Gibson / The Rectory / Bermondsey / London'. A postmark at upper right corner and mark where a stamp may have been (steamed off for re-use?) with '_Paid_' written by hand in black ink. An embossed roundel containing a rose on the opening flap on the verso. Two postmarks on the verso, one printed in blue ink: '.CATEST.NE / FE 15 / 1851'.
