Description

A boxed valentine. A valentine contained inside a shallow white cardboard box with a lid. Heavy white card with lilac wash around the edges and an embossed bow design border with dots of silver frosting. A central heart-shaped frame of lilac-tinted white card is affixed at upper centre, tied to the front of the card with blue silk ribbon at left and upper centre. The frame contains a sheet of rice-paper onto which a bunch of violets is hand-painted in gouache. Another sprig of violets is hand-painted onto the card at lower left. The message: WITH MY LOVE is embossed and filled with silver frosting at lower right. Inside, a double sheet of white wove paper is tied into the card with the blue ribbon. On the left-hand inside page at lower left: 'Made in England'. On the right-hand inside page, a lithographed verse: 'Loving greetings now are spoken / And this card my wish shall bear / Be thy peace and joy unbroken / Be thy future blest and fair / Hearty Greetings / and / All Best Wishes / to my / Dear Valentine'. A price of '2/- [2 shillings]' is written in graphite onto the lid of the box at upper left. This valentine is similar in style and technique to P.14605-R.
