A large quarto-size valentine of thin, white, coated paper with a lace-paper border and central cut-paper circle with four flaps cut away to reveal handwritten verses. The roundel is decorated with gilt and hand-coloured embossed purple flowers and a large embossed bow with a green and gilt diamond pattern. The two-line verses found in each partition are written in black ink, clockwise from upper centre: 'Wilt thou be Mine / Dear Valentine?' ; 'For thee then alone I sigh / Pity me dearest or I die' ; 'I am content whate'er my lot / If you my dear forget me not' ; 'To be beloved is all I need / and when I love I love indeed'. The interior is blank. A watermark: J WHATMAN / 1845. The valentine has been folded several times.
