Description

Stoneware, hand carved, unglazed.

White stoneware bowl cut from a hemisphere, the outside deeply carved with shapes that suggest organic forms. On the inside, carved shapes lead down to eight sharp points which meet in the centre of the base. The underside has sharp edges which come together to act as a near-stable base.

Note

Halima Cassell, was born in 1975 in Pakistan, brought up in Manchester and studied at the University of Central Lancashire and Manchester City College. She lived for a time in Blackburn but is now based in rural Shropshire. Fusing her Asian roots with a fascination for African pattern, her intricate carved stoneware vessels are reminiscent of Middle Eastern architectural and decorative design. This vessel is an example of her recent work, in which she cuts dramatically into the form to distort it. The result is an essay in white and shade. The title ‘Scarabeo’, meaning beetle, suggests a further influence for this form. Halima’s pieces take 100-250 hours to complete. As well as clay, she also works in other materials such as stone, wood, plaster, bronze and glass.
