Description

Large seal paste box and cover. Hard-paste porcelain painted in underglaze blue. Thickly potted, circular box and cover, with rounded sides, tapering to a low foot with flat, recessed, glazed base. The cover is decorated on the outside with scholars' leisurely pursuits in a garden (musicians and gaming parties at checkers and other pursuits). The inside is decorated with a couple offering incense to Shang Yuan Furen riding a qilin. The box is painted on the outside with sages, pavilion and a boatman (Shan Shui subjects), and on the inside with a junk in a mountain gorge.

History note: Purchased from Sotheby's 6 June 1935, Charles E. Russell Collection, for £10.0s.0d, Lot 81; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
