History note: Henriette von Motesiczky, Vienna 1930s - 13 March 1938 when she left for Austria; with Karl von Motesiczky; examined by the Zentralstelle für Denkmalschutz (Central Office for Monument Conservation) and barred from intended export to Henriette in the U.K., September 1938; examined at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, October 1938; returned to Karl von Motesiczky, early November 1938; Karl von Motesiczky arrested on 13 October 1942, deported to Auschwitz, died on 25 June 1943; offered for auction at Dorotheum (submitted by Albert Pfneisel), 27 July 1943; Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, by whom acquired at auction, 19-22 October 1943, arriving November 1943; restitution decision, June 1949; sent to Henriette von Motesiczky in the UK, 17 May 1950; Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, by inheritance, 1978; Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust, 1996; from whom acquired by The Fitzwilliam Museum, 2016
Given by the Trustees of the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust in memory of Marie-Louise's brother Karl Motesiczky (1904-1943), who died in Auschwitz.
