Description

Netsuke: katabori: Daruma. Wood, ivory, horn and metal. Rounded wood figure of Daruma, seated enveloped in his voluminous cloak, his face, inset in ivory, peeping out with dark features and inlaid horn eyes. Two inlaid ivory hands emerge from the folds of his cloak and he has an hossu (fly-switch) on his back; the handle is inlaid in metal (possibly silver), finely incised and inset with a rounded piece of ivory; the hair is finely carved with traces of red. There is a finely carved circular inset ivory himotoshi in the centre of his back. The rounded shape of Daruma's lower half resembles a mokugyo with two holes joined by a split.
