20 uncoloured, uncut woodcuts of Spanish playing cards, one of two identical large sheets printed in the late-nineteenth century from an old woodblock onto white laid paper. See also P.14640-R. P.14639-R is in slightly better condition than P.14640-R. A printed inscription at the top of the sheet: 'Cartes Espagnoles. / Epreuve tirée sur le bois original donné à M. le Dr Max. Michelin par M. Fanjoux, sous-préfet de Nogent-sur-Seine'; trans.: 'Printed from the original woodblock given to Dr. Max. Michelin by M. Fanjoux, sub-prefect of Nogent-sur-Seine (north central France)'. The cards represented from the four suits of Clubs (bastos), Swords (espadas), Cups (copas) and Coins (oros) are, from top row, left to right: Knight (Caballo) of Clubs (on horseback), King (Rey) of Clubs, Jack (Sota) of Swords, Knight (Caballo) of Swords (on horseback), King (Rey) of Swords; Second row, left to right: Knight (Caballo) of Coins (on horseback), Jack (Sota) of Cups, Knight (Caballo) of Cups (on horseback), King (Rey) of Cups, Jack (Sota) of Clubs; Third row, left to right: Ace of Clubs, Ace of Coins (which contains the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile 1492-1504), Jack (Sota) of Coins, King (Rey) of Coins, Ace of Cups; Fourth row, left to right: Seven of Swords (straight swords typical of Spanish suits), Eight of Swords, Ace of Swords, Nine of Swords, Six of Swords. The paper is watermarked: 'D & C BLAUW' with a laurel wreath containing a roman numeral 'IV'. The British Museum also has an impression. See: 1896,0501.1549.
