Description
Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). Wellington (Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, 1769-1852; Prime Minister from 1828 to 1830) rides a horse, his cloak flying out behind him. Speech inside a speech bubble: 'Hello young man be quiet / with your whip - I tell you / I won't ride over you - / if you get out of my way ['if you get out of my way' printed in smaller font]'. A younger male figure (Lord Clanricarde; Ulick John de Burgh, 1st Marquess of Clanricarde, 1802-1874) stands in front of Wellington's horse, leg's astride and holding aloft a whip. Printed speech inside a speech bubble: 'I'll take card you do _not_ ride / your High Horse over _me_-'. The artist's initials in monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'DANGER OF RIDING ON TOO HIGH A HORSE.'. The publisher's details printed below: 'Published by Thos McLean, 26 Haymarket, July 17th 1830.'. Printer's details below the border at lower right: 'Printed by C. Motte, 23, Leicester Sqre.'. Handwritten in graphite at upper right: '72'. A number '[72]' printed in square brackets in the right-hand margin on p. 309 relates to the handwritten number at upper right, both referencing the sequence of John Doyle's Political Sketches series.
