Printmaker:
Doyle, John (HB)
Publisher:
McLean, Thomas
Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). A long ladder composed of men (reformers), is propped against a large mountain labelled 'ROCK of POWER'. On top of the mountain stands a group of men, including Brougham in wig and robes, who attacks the ladder with his mace and Lord Grey who prepares to attack the ladder with a long sword. An archway with the sign: 'TREASURY', is behind them. Sir Robert Peel can be seen climbing the mountain at the far left. Signed with artist's monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'A VISION but no DREAM'. The publisher's details printed below the border to the left: 'Published by Thos. McLean, 26, Haymarket, April 28th 1834.'. An eye-shaped blind stamp at lower left: 'SUBSCRIBER'S / COPY'. 'HB' is usually seen at the centre of this stamp, but the embossing is weak and so it is not visible. Printer's details below the border to the right: 'A. Ducôté's Lithogy, 70, St Martins Lane'. Printed above the border at upper right: 'HB Sketches No 315'. P.14743-R is another impression.
