Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). Two portly men are engaged in a fist-fight at the centre, Daniel O'Connell on the left and Lord Althorp on the right. They are surrounded by onlookers. From the left: Edward Southwell Ruthven, Richard Lalor Shiel (holding a bottle in the air), Thomas Langlois Lefroy, Sir Robert Peel and Sir Robert Harry Inglis (all three at the centre), Thomas Spring Rice (holding a bottle) and Edward John Littleton, who says: "We are beat! - we give in!". John Bull stands at the far right holding a pocket watch with Lord Brougham just seen beside him on the right. Signed with artist's monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'A _FANCY_ SKETCH'. Below the title: 'Shewing a select specimen of the _Cross-Palpable_'. The publisher's details printed below the border to the left: 'Published by Thos. McLean, 26, Haymarket, August 11th, 1834.'. A small, circular blind stamp at lower left: 'THOs. MCLEAN'. The printer's details are not given. Printed above the border at upper right: 'HB Sketches No. 338. P.14766-R is another impression.
