Description

Sechstes Blatt' [Plate Six], printed at upper centre. Wood-engraving with a yellow tint. In the final scene, Death, unclothed now, sits on the horse of Madness, a laurel wreath crown proclaiming his victory and still holding the Revolutionary flag. He surveys the dead and dying men all around from his vantage - the blood still spurting from a wound in the side of the man on the right, who recognises Death too late. A child and his mother weep for their dead husband and father on the right, whilst the horse of Madness licks the blood from a wound in the chest of the prostrate figure in the left foreground. The wood-engraver's surname with initials are boldly carved into the block and printed at lower right: 'GABER SC.'. Four short verses by Robert Reinick are set out below the image: 'Der sie geführt - es war der Tod!' ['He whom they had followed was Death!'] ... 'Der held der rothen Republik' ['The hero of the red Republic'].
