Description

Etching with surface tone on laid paper. An oval medallion containing a three-quarter-length portrait of an older gentleman wearing a powdered bob-wig and seated in a chair in three-quarter profile facing left. A book is held open in his right hand. The medallion is framed with a border and offset against a rectangular etched background. A box below the image contains the engraved text: 'Rev.d Samuel Rogers A.M.an:aet.50 / Rect.r of Husbands Bosworth & of Brampton in / the County of Northampton & Chaplain to the / Right Hon.ble John Earl Spencer.'. On the verso at upper left is an inscription written in brown ink which relates the print to the collection of John Chaloner Smith (1827-1895): 'JCSmith / 8.388(2)'. The Reverend Samuel Rogers, A.M. ('Artium Magister' or 'Master of Arts') (1732-1790), though Rector of Husbands Bosworth (from 1777) and Brampton and chaplain to Earl Spencer in Northamptonshire, actually resided in Bath. See Notes. This portrait of Rogers aged 50 years old and etched by Bath printmaker, William Hibbart, has been cut from the frontispiece of Rogers's book of poems (which is referenced in the portrait),_Poems on various occasions, consisting of original pieces and translation_ 2 vols, published by T. Shrimpton, Bath, 1782.
