Laurence Delvaux Portrait of Laurent Delvaux
Printmaker: Hibbart, William
Etching with drypoint on laid paper. A half-length portrait of Flemish sculptor, Laurent Delvaux wearing a floppy felt cap and fur-trimmed robe, a white cravat around his neck. His body is directed towards the right, his head turned three-quarters towards the viewer, looking left. He places his left hand on the head of a male antique bust in the right foreground. Production details in the margin at lower right: 'W. Hibbart Sculp.'. Title engraved in the margin below: 'LAURENCE DELVAUX.'. This plate was produced for Horace Walpole's _Anecdotes of Painting in England_ of 1762 and appeared in vol. 4 within the section, 'Statuaries in the Reign of George II', p.100. An inscription in graphite on the verso: 'P [?of] Pl [?of]' is probably a reference to this location. Two inscriptions on the verso in the lower left corner relate to price: '1/6'; '6d'. The British Museum holds a proof before the title was added. See: 1848,1125.290.
