Lady D[iana] Beauclerks children The children of Lady Diana Beauclerk mourning the flight of a bird from a cage
Printmaker: Beauclerk, Diana, Lady
Etching, engraving and aquatint in brown ink on thin laid paper. Two children mourning the loss of a bird from its cage. The elder child wears a large picture hat and kneels beside the open bird cage. The younger child stands to the right, his/her hand wiping tears from his/her face. Inscription on the verso, handwritten in brown ink: 'Lady D Beauclerks children / N.21046 / private plate'. The hand is that of print collector, Joseph Gulston (1744/45-1786), the 'N.' inventory number identifying it as once part of his print collection. British portrait prints formed the bulk of his enormous collection of around 53,000 prints. A hand-coloured version of this print is in the collection of the British Museum. See: 1867,0309.426. This print was also once owned by Gulston and bears a similar inscription in his hand on the verso, with an 'N.' number that is the next consecutive number to the Fitzwilliam print, i.e. N. 21047.
