Etching and aquatint on wove paper. Landscape with a gentleman in the foreground, running towards trees in some alarm, his hat on the ground in front of him and one shoe missing with the stocking fallen around his ankle. He looks behind and to the right at a semi-circular arrangement of dark funnel shapes shooting out flames and sparks like fireworks. Engraved title in the lower margin: 'Copper-bottom's retreat, or a View of Carron Work!!!'. In the margin at lower left: [I. K]AY [17]97'. An inscription in graphite written above the engraved title: 'Alexander Forbes of Callendar near Falkirk: Contractor for copper for the Navy'. This inscription, with the erroneous reference to 'Alexander' is repeated on the verso, along with other inscirptions in different hands: 'Alex.r Forbes of Callendar near Falkirk: Contractor for copper for the Navy; 1x-3; 1/6'. The scene relates William Forbes of Callendar, who created a fortune supplying copper to the Royal Navy. See notes.
