Description

Etching on paper. The Holy Family, Mary on a donkey with the infant Christ, Joseph to the left of the donkey walking with a staff, moving from left to right. Set within a mountainous landscape with a column surmounted with a classical urn in the middleground at centre left. Inscribed on the plate below the image at lower left: 'Paul Van Somer In. fe. et ex'. This appears to be a copy after an etching of the subject Flight into Egypt by Paul van Somer II, probably Hollstein, 20: 'Mary faces right but looks at Christ Whose hand she holds. Joseph at left guiding donkey.' The signing differs, however, from that described in Hollstein.
