Description

Etching on paper. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man in profile facing right with natural, chin-length hair, curled upwards at the back. He wears a plain coat and neck-tie. An inscription in pen and ink on the board below (probably curatorial in origin): 'REV. JOHN COWPER, FELLOW OF BENET- / CORPUS CHRISTI COLLEGE. BROTHER OF / THE POET.'. Rev. John Cowper (1737-1770) became a Fellow of Corpus Christi (Benet) College, Cambridge in 1763. He was Rector of Foxton from 1765 until his death in 1770. He was the younger brother of William Cowper, the poet. See also P.14849-R, another impression. See Notes.
