(After)
Etching after a portrait drawing (same direction) by Tyson of local Cambridge barrister, Jacob Butler (1681-1765), half-length in profile to the left, with shoulder-length hair and wearing a wide-brimmed tricorn hat pulled down low and Judicial bands. Two books are stacked on a ledge to the left with a third open on top. Etched within the image at upper right: 'Rembrant / D: 1630'. Within a border. Engraved within the plate in the margin at upper left: 'Bibl. Top. Brit. No.XXXVIII ' and at upper right: 'To face p.I. of the Appendix'. Engraved within the plate in the lower margin: 'Jacob Butler Esq.r of Barnwell.'. This version of the portrait retains all the details of the original drawing (see DRAWING), including the third book and the disingenuous 'Rembrant' signature and date, but is more highly worked. As engraved lettering in the upper margin indicates, it was published as a reproductive plate in, 'The History and Antiquities of Barnwell Abbey and of Sturbridge Fair', _Bibliotheca Topgraphica Britanica_, No. XXXVIII, J. Nichols, 1786. Proof with publisher's instructions and before publisher's details.
