Etching and drypoint on paper. Portrait of an old woman known as 'Mother Shepherd' who was a shoe-cleaner at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. 'Sidney' was often used as an informal name for the college. Head and shoulders to front, cross-eyed, with a wart above her left eye, facing the viewer. She wears a shawl and bonnet. Within an etched border. Below the border, etched onto the plate at lower left: 'Hutchinson delin.t et sculp.t 1773 / Mother SHEPHERD / Shoe-cleaner to / SIDNEY COLLEGE Aet: 78'. Inscribed below in graphite onto the mount board: 'By Robert Hutchinson / brother of William Hutchinson who wrote / a history of Co Durham'.
