Sampler. Polychrome silk embroidery on woollen tammy cloth in cross, stem, satin and encroaching satin stitch.
Approx. 33cm x 38cm, 13" x 15".
Floral border, repeat pattern of honeysuckle and columbine, enclosing a verse "An Address" above the inscription "Jane Margaretta Jones Aged 11 1796" which is flanked by floral sprigs with a bow beneath.
The verse: Go on dear Girl proceed witrh care /The course which you've begun/ So shall success your labour's crown/ And pleasure yet unknown/ Exert your utmost skill to please/ Endeavour to excell/proceed with caution persevere/ And all will then be well/Obedient ever be to those /Whose province is to rule/ Submission always gains respect/ From wise men and from fools/ And when your studies are complete/ Your education o'er/ Give both your parents grateful thanks/ They will desire no more.
The above was published at least as early as 1782 in The Lady's Magazine or Entertaining Companion for the Fair Sex(1770-1847), a lavishly illustrated monthly magazine .
Jane was christened on 26th August 1785 at Aston Somerville, Worcester, her father Daniel, her mother Elizabeth.
