Sampler. Very faded polychrome silks on loosely woven linen in cross stitch.
31 cm x 31cm. 12 1/4" x 12 1/4".
A border of a single line of cross stitch encloses at the top an upper and lower case alphabet and numerals 1-12.
Beneath these is inscribed "Ellen Atkin her Work in The Year 1837", followed by the verse: "Two things have I required of thee/Deny me them not before I die" and " Remove far from me my vanity and lies/Give me neither Poverty nor lies/Feed me with food convenient for me"
The first is based on Proverbs 30.7, and the second on Proverbs 30.8
