Woollen ground embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, chain & satin stitch. Unfinished.
A rectangular sampler comprising an ovel map within a floral border surrounded by randomly placed traditional detached motifs, flora and fauna, with a more dominant house top left and right.
The under drawing of the unstitched areas of the map border and county boundaries can be seen. The map comprises England, Wales, the Scottish borders and the mention of Ireland and France.
There is a compass to the south of Wales and wreath and ribbon cartouche to the top right inscribed " A/Map/of/ England/ and/Wales".
Above the oval frame is the inscription "Father of heaven in whom our hopes confide/ Whose power defends us and whose precepts guide".
This is from the third verse of the hymn "Again returns the day of holy rest" by William Mason (1725-1797). mason was an English divine, born Hull, St. John's Cambridge, ordained 1754, Canon of York Minster 1762. Friend of Thomas Gray, Horace Walpole, Joshua Reynolds etc.
There are also some inscribed letters, "M Q Y Z" at the top and "b7c" in the cartouche.
