Léon Victor Solon (1862-1957) was the son of Louis Solon. He studed at the Hanley School of Art, and the South Kensington School before joining Mintons in 1895, and was promoted to Art Director of the firm in 1903. From 1901 he was assisted by John Wadsworth. (1872-19 ), who had previously designed for Bagguley's the book-binders in Newcastle-under-Lyme. In 1909 Solon emigrated to the United States where he had a distinguished career as a designer of architectural ceramics.
Solon and Wadsworth led the introduction of Minton ‘Secessionist Ware’, range of vases, plates, teapots, jardinières and other items featuring Art Nouveau designs applied to new elongated shapes and accentuated by slip-trailing. Solon favoured sinuous figurative and foliate designs, Wadsworth’s tend to be more rationalised and restrained. 'Secessionist Ware' was produced until 1914
